What is a Rotary Cylinder?

Rotary cylinders are pneumatic or hydraulic devices used to convert fluid pressure into rotational movement. Unlike a traditional linear cylinder–which creates straight-line operation–a rotary cylinder creates angular movement. Usually, these consist of a cylinder body with a piston and a shaft (the shaft rotates with piston: moves within the cylinder).

What is the working principle of pneumatic rotary cylinder?

As high-pressure fluid travels into either end of the cylinder, it forces the shifting and connected shaft to turn one way. This wire can be pushed to one end by a resource utilizing the pressurized fluid and as it's moved to fill the fluid towards the opposite side, a spring or counterbalance would shift the piston and shaft again to the original position.

 

As an example, a standard double-acting rotary cylinder has pressurized air or oil applied to one side of the piston to produce rotation in one direction. To spin in the reverse direction, fluid pressure is applied to the other side of the piston. Single-acting cylinders use an internal spring or external force to return the piston to its original position.
